On June 23rd 2014, Mr Stratos Simopoulos, General Secretary of Public Works from the Ministry of Transport, visited Thessaloniki to inaugurate the construction work on the South-east Extension of the cities’ metro. The extension line will connect the Kalamaria district to the city center in 15 minutes and in the future, to the International Airport of Thessaloniki. The extension will be 4.8 Km long with a total of 5 intermediate stops, the end one being Mikra, the NODES interchange site.

Work has already commenced at the Mikra interchange and Nea Krini station, the stop before on the extended line. Alongside Mayor of Kalamaria, Mr Theodosis Bakoglidis and the General Manager of ATTIKO METRO, the company in charge of construction of the extension, Mr George Konstantinidis, the General Secretary of Public Works made an on-site visit to Nea Krini.

In his speech, he underlined the fact that the project has secured funding from the EIB and that it is on time, with the completion and operation of the line foreseen in early 2018. It is estimated that the line will serve approximately 65000 passengers daily and it will provide access to public transport for 91000 people. It is estimate that it will create 1040 new job vacancies during construction and 100 permanent jobs when operational.
